净界法师~ 禅观与净土 - 往生篇


Some pointers from the talk attended and pardon again for the incomplete and/or misunderstood notes :

专注 归依 深觉业障重, 信弥陀大愿可救拔

Day 2 (absent but sharing by sister A)
Critical part is when you are dying, need to have clarity of mind that you do not want anything (attachment) from Samsara.
Realise that you are part of emptiness.
If you are well prepared and practice well - need only chant Amituofo once.

The Visualisation of the Pureland taught.

Make sure in Samsara- do 1 important thing - ->finish your good or bad karma
Follow Buddha's method of Visualisation. Have image of Pureland when you are passing.

Question: How quickly can I return from Amituofo’s Pure Land if I wish to swiftly console or help loved ones?

Answer: If we study the Contemplation Sutra’s listing of the nine grades of birth, we will learn that only the last two lowest grades of birth (lower level of the lower grade of birth [下品下生] and middle level of the lower grade of birth [下品中生]) require substantially more time for birth from lotuses to truly enter Pure Land – 12 and 6 kalpas (world cycles) in terms of Samsara’s time. Note that due to relativity of time experienced in Pure Land, this is just 12 and 6 days respectively. (If not practising to reach Pure Land, such beings will be born in hell for a much longer time instead. Of course, once in a lotus, they will be born in Pure Land)

For these two grades of birth then, it would seem difficult to be able to very swiftly notify of having reached Pure Land, or return to help survivors in Samsara. However, being able to depart calmly, clearly and blissfully are also considerable auspicious signs for consolation, among others. (It might also be possible that Amituofo enables signs of assurance to manifest.) As these two grades of birth pertain to those who have done great evil, we should simply ensure we observe the precepts well to prevent being born in these grades, along with successful Nianfo of course.

It is noteworthy that the grade of birth immediately above the two require much shorter duration for birth. This higher level of the lower grade of birth (下品上生) requires only 49 days here (or 0.000003452464512 of a minute there) to be born. One born can thus manifest signs (e.g. through an auspicious dream) for the survivors to assure that one is well around the 49th day of passing. The remaining six grades of course require only from 7 days to less for birth.

As for how soon one who reached Pure Land can return to Samsara to offer more tangible help to survivors, there is no mention of any minimal time in the sutras. However, as there is no mention that it will take long, while Amituofo’s Pure Land is the most efficient Dharma school in the universe, it can be assumed that return can be just as swift.

Although there is, now, naturally attachment to wanting to help immediate loved ones, in Pure Land, as empowered by Amituofo’s blessings, one will be able to recall past relations to all beings. Seeing the interconnected big picture, one will thus know who, how and when best to help first. We will also know if we should train further to be substantially skilful in Pure Land before returning. Remember – not reaching Pure Land for training, we will forget the Dharma and relations to loved ones!

淨界法師:減少嗔恨的方法

  這個地方就是說,我們沒有一個人願意發脾氣,但是我們還是發脾氣,控制不了。那這個問題是在哪裡呢?我們應該分析分析,一個人為什麼會發脾氣?我們的內心,古人說:「心包太虛,量周沙界」,我們的內心能夠包容天、包容地、包容宇宙萬物,但是包容不了一點點的委屈。你會發脾氣,你就是有委屈,你覺得這個是不公平的,你就是認為不公平,你才發脾氣。你認為我的付出跟我的代價不成對比,我不應該得到這個結果。

  但是諸位要知道:因果它不是講今生的,是過去、現在、未來。所以諸位你要永遠記住一個觀念:所有的外境、所有的逆境,都是你內心的罪業變現出來的,跟別人沒有關系,事實上如此。

  所以我們遇到了逆境,你不應該發脾氣,你應該到佛前忏悔,因為你一觀照:哦,我有這個罪業。那你到佛前忏悔,你就說:「我弟子淨界,過去曾經造了一些罪業,所以這個罪業逼出來的時候,變現這個痛苦的果報,我向佛菩薩至誠地忏悔。」說三次。我跟你保證,因緣馬上變化。

  我們一個人很大的悲哀,是什麼悲哀?惡性循環。你過去造了罪業,這個罪業變成逆境的時候,你自己感到委屈,感到委屈就發脾氣,發脾氣就又造罪業,造了罪業,這個罪業表現出來的時候,又是一片逆境,這個時候你要發脾氣,發脾氣又造罪業。那你這個痛苦,幾時能夠消除呢?你這個不是惡性循環嗎?

  所以修行人要把痛苦從這個地方,古人講:「截斷妄流」,從此打住。你只有一個方法,透過智慧的觀照,看到一個人為什麼會發脾氣,因為他感到委屈。為什麼他有委屈呢?因為他作出錯誤的判斷,他認為痛苦是別人給他的,所以愚癡是所有罪過的根源──無明。

  其實我們說穿了,人沒有什麼好委屈的。前生的你創造了今生的你,今生的你創造了來生的你,你必須要為前生的你負責,難道不需要嗎?你前生選擇這樣做,那你今生必須要無條件地承當。因為前生的你創造了今生的你,所以你今生不是為你自己負責,還要為你前生負責,就是這個道理。

【师父的话】---修净土的应该如何发愿?

那么到底你到了净土以后,你是先成佛再度众生,还是先度众生再成佛?我认为没有标准答案。

修净土的人你心中只有两个愿望,只有两个愿望而已:第一个,你要厌离娑婆;第二个,你要欣求极乐。这个愿开出是两个。有些人他想要求生净土,但是娑婆世界的手没有放掉,这个会有问题的。诸位知道吗?
为什么呢?因为,娑婆世界是熟境界,你这边打滚太久了。诸位,你知道你长久以来都呆在哪儿?呆在娑婆世界嘛!你跟这里的一草、一木、每一个人都太熟了。所以,憨山大师说,你只有欣求极乐,没有厌离娑婆,结果,娑婆世界是熟境界,极乐世界对你来说,你只是依稀仿佛了解,叫生疏的境界。临终的时候,心是随熟的境界转。所以你厌离娑婆也很重要啊!所以你发愿时,它是两个方向的:厌离娑婆、欣求极乐都有。
那么到底你到了净土以后,你是先成佛再度众生,还是先度众生再成佛?我认为没有标准答案。佛法很多是没有标准答案的,由你决定。

如果你是悲增上的菩萨,当然你就会去先度众生;
如果你是智增上菩萨,你就会去先成佛道。
怎么知道我是悲增上、智增上呢?可以测试。可以从你的学佛的缘起看出消息,就是你当初的发心。
有些人是看到众生的苦而感动发心的。你为什么想成佛?
因为我看到众生太苦了,我要赶快帮助他。他是缘众生无边誓愿度而发心的,他是缘众生的苦而发心的。
有些人他为什么发菩提心?他看到诸佛的功德太殊胜了,他也想要成就而发心的。从这个最初的你发心的缘起,大概就知道你这个人的根基了。但这两个都不错,没有说谁好谁坏。
但是从这个缘起可以判定,有些人会先成就圣道再度众生;
有些人会先成就众生的缘,福报会很大,然后再成就圣道。
你去回想看看你当初是怎么学佛的?当初你为什么受菩萨戒?
你那个最初的念头你找出来,你大概就知道你未来成佛的时候,是先成佛,还是先度众生。大概跑不掉,那个根基养成以后很难改的。但这两个都不错,都不错。
