Mani Recitation Retreat 2009

OM MANI PADME HUNG
Thanks to all, we made it again! :-)
>100 million recitation :-)
Why 100 Million??? (Pls Click on question or here for answer) :-)
3days of chanting which from it, one can understand oneself better.
Really appreciative of the leading Rinpoches and Lamas on stage. Comparing to them who sit throughout the chanting sessions on stage, I was fidgeting all the way, swaying from side to side, having own self-declared toilet breaks:P, trying hard to fight my restlessness especially after an hour... :P
Also thanks to the volunteers who had help make the event a success, and to the Perfect who tour around the hall to wake us up. :-)
The wonderful lunches which the portion being much more than last year's that gave me no excuse to have 2nd round at the foodcourt. :P

Om Mani Padme Hung

May we all purified our body, speech & mind through the retreat & see you in Pureland...:-)

Amazing Natural Food Nutritions!

More Health tips received from email...

Animal Paradise

Next Animal liberation related event is today's tour of the Animal Protection farm, Animal Paradise, started by ex-Mediacorp actor, Xie Shao Guang, in JB, Pekan Nanas, . I think it started with a place for abandoned/ill-treated cats & dogs to today's operation to include horses, cows, goats, pigs, monkeys, guinea pigs, porcupines and even deers is impressive.

I was surprised that mum was interested in the trip when I just briefly mentioned about the activity organised by the temple as mum is not one who will encourage her children to touch animals. I believe it must be with blessings of Buddha & Bodhisattvas that my parents were interested and hopefully with brief contact of the Dharma teachings involved, that will lead them to more future Dharma events and also subconsciously reduce their intake of meat.

Guanyin at entrance of farm.

I was originally expecting the farm to be like a safari with all animals roaming freely but the animals are in enclosed area depending on their nature and receptiveness to human.

All the saved animals there have a story of their own.

Turkeys saved from being served on dining table during Christmas

Although the facilities are primitive, the liberated/saved animals are at least in a home under the love and care of the compassionate care-takers.

The farm does not accept just any animals but has their criteria of entry, hence the animals are there, each with a story of their own. It is still not easy to maintain the farm by one's own effort hence Donations are always welcome to support the operations of the animal protection farm and you may also opt to support any species of animals you like. :-) The farm is not open to public except on special/pre-arrangement so pls do not venture on your own without informing them of your visit. :P

Fish Liberation

This seems to be a month of affinity with animal liberation, 1st attended bro Benny's fish liberation at the open sea using a cruise ship from Harbourfront. It is a more convenient place to meet for me compared to Changi which is his more frequent meeting venue for his monthly life liberation, and the cruise ship will be a better arrangement to invite my family along. When received sms abt the event, I immediately ask my parents if they are interested & glad to know that they were and so was my sister who surprisingly didn't refuse the invitation.

One point I like bro Benny's session is I can be ensured he will try to find the best place to release the animals of the day depending on their nature/requirement of habitat. Another point is I like his leading of the group in chanting and helping the fishes/animals take the Three Refuge to not only benefit their physical life but spiritual life, and we sincerely wish for the liberated animals not to be reborn into lower 3 realms after this life. He will also has a Q&A session to highlight frequent myths people have abt fish liberation which I think is useful, especially for 1st timers.
If one is not available to attend the event and would like to particpate in his monthly life liberation event, one may just transfer money to his designated life liberation account, inform him to confirm receipt and by end of day, he will inform of donors how many life had been liberated for the event and let all rejoice which I think this sms info is important so that people know what the money had been spent on and will rejoice & be motivated to support future events for the many lives saved thru combined effort.
May All be Well & Happy. Amituofo.

Wise Dana?

Dana at S state is kind of a disappointment.
Ice-cream given & food given out.

Something to rejoice but no, comparatively to earlier states visited, that seems to be a richer town & as it is a carnival event, most are well-dressed for outing.

Chaos happened at certain point of distribution that caused me to realise that there is still a long way for me in compassion.

Was also disappointed with the behavior of a shop-owner who feigned kindness in volunteering to help us store a few cartons of of ice-cream in their "big refrigerators" and later when we wanted to retrieve from them, they claimed that had not happened and whatever in their refrigerators were theirs and even refused to return the carton containers around the shop (I was told the containers were on lease from the ice-cream company so I guess we had to compensate them for the loss as well ).

However, there are some comforting Thank you from our recipients of distribution.

That was a beautiful place from pictures & of great cultural heritage but was in no more mood to appreciate that. However, there are some comforting events later in evening.

Alot more of wisdom & compassion needed to handle the situations.

At poorer state, was disturbed to see that they would hide their given food under their clothes or bag to get another portion while at affluent town also same.

Friend commented that at poorer state, they want more as they do not know when is the next dana or for their kins who is not present while those at more affluent places is greed.

Maybe once in a while giving dana raises their expectations, the long term solution would be via education and teaching them how to farm for food rather than relying on dana.

Friend commented that at a Buddhist country, at the refugee camp, when they 1st visited, they gave them money, but on repeated visit when the refugees were asked for their wish list, you guess what they want?
More money? No... they just want the blessing strings that often given out by Theravada Venerables. Simple wishes, happy people...

At Bodhgaya where we made another round of dana of food to the public, I was touched to see a polio-infected boy who, like a leader go around to ensure his friends in similar state got their food and the way they helped feed each other really touches one.
May they be blessed and have a better life...
Amituofo...

Reflecting...
We are fortunate to be living in Singapore, be the ones to be able to give Dana, be at a state where over the weekend, there are so many Dharma activities for one to choose from.
What if the conditions for my next rebirth is not good & I end up in a place not as conducive, will I be so engrossed to improve my physical conditions that I will not practise good and where Dharma is not heard of? then conditions deteriorate further?
That thought further enhanced my aspiration to pass my final exam to gain entry to Amitabha Buddha's Pureland where there is only conducive environment to advance and improve my compassion and wisdom til I am ready again to help many others back in Samsara.
Amituofo...
May I meet good teachers and fellow mates and advance on the right path to gain entry to your Pureland after this life.

Important to have enough Sleep

Extracted from fwded email
-------------------------------
Last few years there were many young excutives below 50 years old just drop dead even though there were as fit as a cow. Please read on.

What killed Ranjan Das and Lessons for Corporate India

A month ago, many of us heard about the sad demise of Ranjan Das from Bandra, Mumbai. Ranjan, just 42 years of age, was the CEO of SAP-Indian Subcontinent, the youngest CEO of an MNC in India . He was very active in sports, was a fitness freak and a marathon runner. It was common to see him run on Bandra's Carter Road . Just after Diwali, on 21st Oct, he returned home from his gym after a workout, collapsed with a massive heart attack and died. He is survived by his wife and two very young kids.

It was certainly a wake-up call for corporate India . However, it was even more disastrous for runners amongst us. Since Ranjan was an avid marathoner ( in Feb 09, he ran Chennai Marathon at the same time some of us were running Pondicherry Marathon 180 km away ), the question came as to why an exceptionally active, athletic person succumb to heart attack at 42 years of age.

Was it the stress?

A couple of you called me asking about the reasons. While Ranjan had mentioned that he faced a lot of stress, that is a common element in most of our lives. We used to think that by being fit, one can conquer the bad effects of stress. So I doubted if the cause was stress.

The Real Reason

However, everyone missed out a small line in the reports that Ranjan used to make do with 4-5 hours of sleep. This is an earlier interview of Ranjan on NDTV in the program 'Boss' Day Out':

Here he himself admits that he would love to get more sleep ( and that he was not proud of his ability to manage without sleep, contrary to what others extolled ).

The Evidence

Last week, I was working with a well-known cardiologist on the subject of ‘Heart Disease caused by Lack of Sleep’. While I cannot share the video nor the slides because of confidentiality reasons, I have distilled the key points below in the hope it will save some of our lives.

Some Excerpts:
· Short sleep duration ( <5 2009.="" 350="" 5-6="" 500="" 6="" as="" bp="" br="" by="" compared="" for="" high="" hours="" in="" increased="" kills.="" know="" longer="" night.="" or="" paper="" per="" published="" risk="" slept="" than="" those="" to="" who="" you="">
· Young people ( 25-49 years of age ) are twice as likely to get high BP if they sleep less. Paper published in 2006.

· Individuals who slept less than 5 hours a night had a 3-fold increased risk of heart attacks. Paper published in 1999.

· Complete and partial lack of sleep increased the blood concentrations of High sensitivity C-Reactive Protein (hs-cRP), the strongest predictor of heart attacks. Even after getting adequate sleep later, the levels stayed high!!

· Just one night of sleep loss increases very toxic substances in body such as Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Tumour Necrosis Factor-Alpha (TNF-alpha) and C-reactive protein (cRP). They increase risks of many medical conditions, including cancer, arthritis and heart disease. Paper published in 2004.

· Sleeping for <=5 hours per night leads to 39% increase in heart disease. Sleeping for <=6 hours per night leads to 18% increase in heart disease. Paper published in 2006.

Ideal Sleep

For lack of space, I cannot explain here the ideal sleep architecture. But in brief, sleep is composed of two stages: REM ( Rapid Eye Movement ) and non-REM. The former helps in mental consolidation while the latter helps in physical repair and rebuilding. During the night, you alternate between REM and non-REM stages 4-5 times.

The earlier part of sleep is mostly non-REM. During that period, your pituitary gland releases growth hormones that repair your body. The latter part of sleep is more and more REM type.

For you to be mentally alert during the day, the latter part of sleep is more important. No wonder when you wake up with an alarm clock after 5-6 hours of sleep, you are mentally irritable throughout the day (lack of REM sleep). And if you have slept for less than 5 hours, your body is in a complete physical mess ( lack of non-REM sleep ), you are tired throughout the day, moving like a zombie and your immunity is way down ( I’ve been there, done that ).

Finally, as long-distance runners, you need an hour of extra sleep to repair the running related damage.

If you want to know if you are getting adequate sleep, take Epworth Sleepiness Test below.

Interpretation: Score of 0-9 is considered normal while 10 and above abnormal. Many a times, I have clocked 21 out the maximum possible 24, the only saving grace being the last situation, since I don’t like to drive ( maybe, I should ask my driver to answer that line ).

In conclusion:

Barring stress control, Ranjan Das did everything right: eating proper food, exercising ( marathoning! ), maintaining proper weight. But he missed getting proper and adequate sleep, minimum 7 hours. In my opinion, that killed him.
If you are not getting enough sleep ( 7 hours ), you are playing with fire, even if you have low stress.

I always took pride in my ability to work 50 hours at a stretch whenever the situation warranted. But I was so spooked after seeing the scientific evidence last week that since Saturday night, I ensure I do not even set the alarm clock under 7 hours. Now, that is a nice excuse to get some more sleep.

Unfortunately, Ranjan Das is not alone when it comes to missing sleep. Many of us are doing exactly the same, perhaps out of ignorance. Please forward this mail/article to as many of your colleagues/friends as possible, especially those who might be short-changing their sleep. If we can save even one young life because of this email, I would be the happiest person on earth.

Take care if you're a young excutive, RL

P.S. - Forward the above to save some young fellows.

Robe Offering & Pindapata Ceremony 2009

Yellow/Golden colored umbrella sheltering the Buddha Tooth Relic

Devotees crowded the Hall at Spore Expo.

Well, this is certainly an eye-opener event for me to attend the Offering 10,000 Robes & Pindapata (Alms round) Ceremony 2009, organised by Mahakaruna Buddhist Society, last Sunday, 1 Nov 2009 which happens to fall on full moon day of lunar September.
It was announced 11,200 robes will be offered to Sangha around the world, especially to Sri Lanka, Myammar and India.
Maybe it is Sri Lanka culture? They made a round around the hall with the offerings and let devotees touch the offerings as a symbol of offering made by all.

It was touching to see senior elderly monks who for the sake of benefitting devotees, made their Alms round despite some with difficulty in movement. If their volunteers not mindful to help them empty their alms bowl in time, it can be quite heavy but they still strive on. Was informed later in the event that at least 2 of them are more than 90 years old.

It was also interesting to be introduced to Sri Lanka culture amidst attending the event via their Sri Lanka drum & dance performance.

Anti-Aging through a Vegetarian Diet

Attended the talk last Sat, 31 Oct by Dr Sanjay Doshi , organised by VSS.

It is definitely a very informative talks which imparted quite a lot of tips on healthy eating, especially on anti-cancer or cancer prevention food.
Hopefully VSS could reproduce the main points on their web.

The benefits of Broccoli was much elaborated, a good source against breast cancer.

Tomatoes' nutrient effect would be very much enhanced after processed or cooked as the heat breaks down the cell wall. A good source against prostrate cancer.

My favourite, Avocado, is good at causing 17% drop in total blood cholesterol, reducing greatly the bad cholesterol.

Garlic, which I dislike has stop cancer-causing substance , speed DNA repair & kills cancer cells. Best to peel & chop the cloves & let it sit 15-20 minutes before cooking. This process activates the enzymes & release sulfur containing compounds.

And this is 1st time I heard about Flaxseed which is to be very effective at reducing cancer, stroke and diabetes. Best effective is to consume 2-4 tablespoons of grounded flaxseed daily.
A newbie to me that I would like to find out more & try...

Carrots only known to me as rich in Vitamin A was also recommended for consumption as one that helps stops cancer cell growth. Thought eating it raw will be direct nutritional but was advised that steaming it whole then cutting into slices will gives it best effect. Juices was less encouraged as juicing will immediately release sugar into the blood.

Couldn't remember all the goodies mentioned in the talk & hope they have more such informative talks in future. :-)

Eggs Involve Killing

Received this via email...

With every egg demanded, many male chicks are killed…
This is standard practice all over the world in factories.
In USA alone, 200 million chicks are killed at birth at hatcheries yearly.

"Whatever living beings there may be — feeble or strong, long, stout,
or of medium size, short, small, large,
those seen or those unseen, those dwelling far or near,
those who are born as well as those yet to be born -
may all beings have happy minds.
Let him not deceive another nor despise anyone anywhere.
In anger or ill will let him not wish another ill.
Just as a mother would protect her only child with her life
even so let one cultivate a boundless love towards all beings.” - The Buddha (Metta Sutta)

Secrets of Happiness

Again , "Hijjacked" by BF in between his transit from Perth to London. Ajahn Brahm kindly gave another Dharma Talk to guide us towards Happiness.

During his 1.5 hr talk, pointers noted:

WHAT DO I NEED?
BE CONTENTED WITH WHAT YOU HAVE,
LEARNING HOW TO BE CONTENTED

Caring heals...Curing comes secondary (I think those in Medical Healthcare Service shd invite Ajahn to advise how to radiate care and kindness in their work and achieve efficiency:P)

Kindness is the Universal religion...
When someone is trying to upset you, why let him upset you?
Smile and take charge of your own happiness...

Secrets of unhappiness: worry about the future, worrying about what will happen next makes one unable to enjoy Today.
Be kind to this moment... TODAY....

How to handle grief over loss of beloved:
Look at what you had enjoyed before with the beloved & not loss

Look for kindness in your heartA true Buddhist is one who is kind and care for others...

There is no Right/Wrong choice
It is just different choice/path chosen...
(Agree...)
With this thinking, you will learn not to be afraid of making choices...

Demystifying

For a Chinese who is a new beginner to Buddhism, they may be wondering why Buddhist are always greeting each other “ Amituofo” when they meet each other.

When they see the Chinese wordings: 南 無 阿 彌 陀 佛 (南 无 阿 弥 陀 佛 )
[To be pronounced as “Nam Mo Amituofo”]
They may literally pronounce per Chinese characters, and become “Nan Wu” and may wrongly interpret as “In South, there is no Amituofo:P
Actually,
Nam Mo” is Sanskrit, which means Paying Homage to

"Amituo" (阿弥陀): Infinite 无量 light 光 ~ wisdom ; Infinite 无量 Life 寿
Fo(佛) means Buddha

Hence, Amituofo is commonly refered to as:
The Buddha of Infinite Light (of Compassion and Wisdom)
and
The Buddha of Infinite Life (due to boundless Merits)

Hence, meaning of Nam Mo Amituofo means Paying Homage to the Buddha of Infinite Light (of Compassion and Wisdom) and Life. (Thanks to bro shi'an's improvement on above explanation)
Greeting each otherAmituofo” is as good as wishing your counterparts: “May you have a wonderful and blessed day”

Applause should be made to the past marketing effort on the wonderfulness of Pureland of Amitabha Buddha to be reborn in, after this life.

Why do people then always associate Amitabha Buddha with death?
It is because we hope that our beloved would able to be reborn in the Fantastic Pureland of Amitabha Buddha after this life, hence we would like to do our last bit of effort to direct the deceased to be in tune with Amitabha Buddha.

When we are sick, we can also think of Amitabha Buddha. It is believed that if one is mindful of Amituofo’s name faithfully, the sick can be better if conditions allow.

One could try the following Experiment, especially when you can sense yourself starting to get symptoms of cold or feeling unwell :

One can sit in a comfortable position (could be in meditative, sitting or standing position), gently close your eyes and silently count:
1. Amituofo,
2. Amituofo,
3. Amituofo,
4. Amituofo,
5. Amituofo,
6. Amituofo,
7. Amituofo,
8. Amituofo,
9. Amituofo,
10. Amituofo and repeat from 1 again.
In this manner of counting, it is also a way to regulate your breath and in a while, you will feel yourself feeling more relaxed and somehow the "qi' (blood circulation) flows much smoother thru your body. (This could be practised when you are walking or doing exercise, you will not feel as panting with the regulation of breath thru mindfulness of the Buddha).

At the same time, you may visualize that warm lights radiate from Amitabha Buddha [or the 3 saints from the west, including the 2 Great Bodhisattvas: Guanyin Pusa (Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara) and Da Shi Zhi Pusa (Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta)] to yourself & the universe & you and others are immersed in the warm light.
At one stage, you may naturally drop the count of 1,2,3 ... and become just mindful of the Buddha: Amituofo, Amituofo, Amituofo...
Personally, through the process, I felt that it somehow synchronizes with the recent message sent by Bro Shi’an which he mentioned at his [Amituofo] Digest Number 137 of the vows of Amitabha Buddha:

“...*[2]* Like Shakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha also sends forth light, in all
directions to touch and comfort beings in need. This is stated in the vows
below, on how Amitabha Buddha's unlimited light of compassion, merits and
wisdom can aid us. Through mindfulness of Amitabha Buddha, we can experience
this light.

Vow #12: If, when I [Dharmakara, who became Amitabha Buddha] attain
Buddhahood, my light should be limited, unable to illuminate at least a
hundred thousand kotis of nayutas of Buddha-lands, may I not attain perfect
awakening.

Vow #33: If, when I attain Buddhahood, beings of all kinds in all
immeasurable and inconceivable Buddha-lands of the ten directions, who
receive my light, that touches their bodies, should not experience
[blessings of peace, happiness,] gentleness and softness of body and mind
that surpasses that of devas and humans, may I not attain perfect awakening….”

That seems to in line with the healing method introduced.

Also useful is bro Shi’an’s reply at his moonpointer blog on helping a non-Buddhist at his death bed, I think he gave a good answer: (http://moonpointer.com/new/moonpointer-wall/comment-page-5/#comment-1544)
(Q:
If someone (a non-Buddhist) you know is dying, already in an unconscious state, and you wld like to chant “Amituofo” for him, for his better rebirth if he could not make it or for his health recovery if it is not time for him to go yet.
However, his family members are Taoists instead of Buddhist who had misconception that the chanting of Amitabha Buddha’s name is more for the dying and afraid that it will cause unease to the patient (including they themselves) refuse the request and also do not want to use the chanting device (Nian Fo Ji) as one suggest to play beside the patient’s bed.
(They do not know the meaning of “ZhuNian”) What’s best approach?
Just chant silently “Amituofo” on his behalf & dedicate merits to him & other beings who also suffer similarly?
Any more could be done?

A:
Hi, my suggestions are these… Let the ‘dying’ and the family know that chanting of Amituofo’s name can help healing too – if the person can still live. This is true, due to the blessings shared by Amituofo.
You can explain the significance of "Zhunian" in a simple manner to both parties by saying that if one is mindful of Amituofo’s name faithfully, the sick can be better if conditions allow, and the dying can be reborn in the most wonderful place possible – Pureland.
If possible, summarise (not recite; as he might not understand) the Amitabha Sutra to the deceased by speaking near his ear.
You can use this ‘prayer’ before reciting Amituofo too – as at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Amituofo/message/28 .
The last stanza is especially important -

By the practice of single-minded mindfulness of Buddha,
by the power of Buddha’s blessings -If I can recover, may I recover swiftly.
If I cannot recover, may I be reborn in Pureland swiftly,
so that I may be liberated swiftly, and return to liberate all swiftly.

Note that there should be no attachment to wanting recovery – because it might not be possible.
Just chant Amituofo openheartedly and sincerely.
You can also chant and share merits with him – but it’s crucial to chant ‘with’ him too – whether he is awake or not – for he might be awake – just unable to respond.
Use words of encouragement to generate faith and aspiration to be born in Pureland.
Tell him countless people had been healed or have peaceful passing due to mindfulness of Amituofo, that his promises to help are real.
You can also do more good deeds in his name – e.g. contribute to fangsheng funds, make donations to print Dharma books, and do any other general charity to help others.
The merits can help him recover or have a good rebirth.

I do wish the above explanation could hopefully demystify any misunderstanding anyone could have about associating Amitabha Buddha only for the deceased. He is in fact about Brightness and Liveliness.

I (and I believe many others who attended their English classes and fellowship) are greatly appreciative of effort and time by bro Zenon and bro Shi’an, to share with us their knowledge about Amitabha Buddha, His Pureland and His great vows, helping to demystify any misunderstanding we could have about the Teachings, especially in explaining the popular Chinese text in English, greatly benefiting the English educated ones, showing all of us, an easier path to enlightenment. (Of course, not to forget too, bro Billy and staff and volunteers, and the Sangha's support to make the Rejoicing classes and sessions possible)
Thank you to everyone who helped make the sessions possible...

Greatly Appreciated (Gan En) , Amituofo. :-)
(Pardon is sought if there is any mis-interpretation about the Teachings)

Copy & Paste function not working?

Was fustrated recently that I was unable to copy & paste words in blog!
Even within the text box itself!
A new restriction or bug???

Fortunately, Crystal was able to advise on how to overcome the problem:

TO CHANGE to EDIT HTML mode at right corner instead of Compose mode and paste it.

Thanks to her, you could continue to enjoy reading nice articles :-)

細節 Detailed

Another Nice article received from email to share with all:-)

急事,慢慢的說;

大事,清楚的說;

小事,幽默的說;

沒把握的事,謹慎的說;

It's Okay....

Recently, just attended a meditation class...

Why meditation?

Learn to be mindful, take a break....

It's okay not to sit cross legged, meditation is in everyday life & not sit in a room & tell people not

to disturb you.

Chinese word is break down into learning & simple.

Breathing in & out.

Breath in till abdomen instead of only to lungs

Praying posture & semi-circle

Homework #1

Refrain from talking unnecessarily

That does not mean you ignore colleagues who greet you but in a sense don't gossip.

Homework #2

Don't rush, give yourself more time to prepare for things

Eye Tips

Health tips on taking care of your eyes from email...

IT Tips: To view Chinese characters

To my horror, after upgrading to Internet Exploere version 8, I was unable to view Chinese characters online.
Exploring the View/Encoding function made it worse,
Fortunately I have an IT savy SIL who managed to identify the problem.

The culprit?
Under Control Panel, Under the Language and Regional option, under tab: Language,
the box : Install files for East Asian Languages was being removed.
Hence, tick it & Restart your computer.

Hope the above could help others who face similar problems...

如果长在鼻梁,代表脊椎骨可能出现问题;

如果是长在鼻头处,可能是胃火大、消化系统异常;

I Wonder Why,

This is one of the earlier books that brought me back to Buddhism, its easy to understand Q&A format explaining the many doubts that I had about religion, about Buddhism. It is written by Ven. Chodron. Many a times, re-reading it is still as refreshing & enjoyable, reminding me of the right views. It is certainly a good introduction book for beginners. For those who prefers to read in Chinese, there is an excellent translation of it ( by bro 涂炳忠) and a beautiful name given to the book, 心灵曙光. Reading the two is rejoicing. :-) They are published by KMSPKS and freely distributed at various locations.

Was somehow feeling kind of restless, abit of "brain dead" on my way home the other day. I switched on my mp3 & somehow tuned to the songs that I had not listened for quite a while. Listening to the wonderful Buddhist songs and mantra from my favourite CDs from 嘹亮(Leow Liang: http://www.leowliang.com). Suddenly, I no longer felt restless but recharged with the blessings of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, Guanyin Pusa.

Among my favourites are the CDs on 大悲愿 and 大悲咒.

The wonderful verses of 大悲愿 reminds one of Bodhicitta and aspiration towards final goal of Nirvana.

Listening to the songs, one also feels motivated to strive on.
May all be able to practise with diligence and perfect as per above aspirations.
Amituofo.

True Meaning of Taking Refuge in Triple Gem

Sometimes, we may not have fully understood the meaning of taking refuge in the Triple Gems, and thru the recent class attended, the teacher is very kind to reinforce the right understanding in us.

Taking Refuge in the

Buddha is not pure worshipping the Buddha but represents ensuring towards True Realisation, Clarity, Not in a state of loss;

Dharma is not just about the Teachings but represents Right and Virtue, away from untruth or incorrectness;

Sangha is not just about Buddhist community but represents Purity of mind vs contamination of greed, hatred, anger, etc...

May we all move steadily on the right path to Nirvana...

The Butterfly

Email series:

The Butterfly

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day, a small opening appeared.
He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress.
It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.
So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.
Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly. What the man, in his kindness and haste, did not understand was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening were one way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our lives. If we were to go through our lives without any obstacles, it would cripple us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. We could never fly!

Human rebirth is indeed precious as through it, we experience both happiness and sadness that would cause us to reflect what is the meaning of life about and want to break from this cycle of birth & death. May we follow the Buddha's guidance to attain ultimate freedom.

Read this Refuge and Bodhicitta Prayer recently & find it beautiful:

In my heart I turn to the Three Jewels of refuge.
May I free suffering beings and place them in bliss.
May the compassionate spirit of love grow within me that I may complete the enlightening path. (recite 3 times)

May All Be Well & Happy.

Identifying a stroke: remember S.T.R.O.

Another email article on healthcare:

INFORMATION EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW........................Blood Clots/Stroke - They Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally.
Hes aid the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.RECOGNIZING A STROKE.
Remember the steps, STRO . Read and Learn!

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

S *Ask the individual to SMILE.

T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)(i.e. It is sunny out today.)

R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

O *Ask him or her to Stick Out the Tongue.
If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side orthe other, that is also an indication of a stroke.

Hope the above info is useful.

MAY ALL BE WELL & HAPPY!!!

Xcellent article on cancer

Received following article from email:

AFTER YEARS OF TELLING PEOPLE CHEMOTHERAPY IS THE ONLY WAY TO TRY AND ELIMINATE CANCER, JH IS FINALLY STARTING TO TELL YOU THERE IS AN ALTERNATIVE WAY.

Cancer Update from JH:
1.. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more cancer cells in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached the detectable size.

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's lifetime.

3. When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumours.

4. When a person has cancer, it indicates the person has multiple nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic, environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver, kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and radiation, the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also causec ancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.
WHAT CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar, it cuts off one important food supply to the cancer cells.
Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful.
A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses but only in very small amounts.
Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in colour. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or seasalt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in thegastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk, cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment.
A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, rather than chicken, beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and fruits help put the body into an alkaline environment.
About 20% can be from cooked food including beans.
Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells.
To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells, try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables including beansprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day.
Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine.
Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer-fighting properties. Water-best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines become putrified and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering.
By refraining from or eating less meat ,it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence,Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc..) to enable the body's own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit.
A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor.
Anger, unforgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment.
Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment.
Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

This is an article that should be sent to anyone important in your life.

There is also a Cancer Curing Sutra that one may consider refering to:

Dharma Cartoon Series

At a visit to the Buddhist Library, the big poster on the cartoon series caught my attention. The animation is a 2009 production by Malaysia's Buddhist Institute Sunday Dhamma School in conjunction with its 80th anniversary.

I am impressed with the animation production and it came to my mind that if D-kidz's Come & See series could work with the production house to produce animation DVDs, it will certainly help spread the Dharma to all in more lively way.
More reviews or info can be found here and here :-)
